On the afternoon of Monday, February 16, the state of Kansas activated a task force from Jonson County to deploy in central Kansas for the upcoming weather threat of high winds and low humidity. Five Type 6 wildland units and two battalion chiefs headed for Salina to stay the night.
The next morning, Weis Fire & Safety Equipment sales representative Bill Schneider got a call from a member of the task force from Johnson County Northwest Consolidated Fire District (NWCFD), which has a Weis Quick Attack from 2018. He explained that the main pressure gauge on the back of the unit wasn’t working properly. Weis invited the team in that truck to visit our Service department to have it replaced.
They soon met with Eric Sommer and Steve Williams in the Weis Service & Repairs shop, and the new gauge was installed within a half an hour. The crew left quickly because they were deployed to fight a large grass fire that had started in Oklahoma and was making its way into Kansas. The Johnson County task force headed to Ashland, Kansas, where the Ranger Road Fire had prompted an evacuation order.
Later on Tuesday afternoon, Deputy Chief Baxter of NWCFD expressed his appreciation for Weis servicing the truck so quickly and on such short notice.
“This is just another example of Team Weis doing what we do when it needs to be done,” says Schneider. “For us, it may be one gauge and not a big deal. When the fire fight is this big…it’s a big deal.”
